The Director of Counseling and Wellbeing holds a critical administrative role at the Institute of American Indian Arts (IAIA), overseeing the staff and procedures related to meeting the mental health and personal development needs of the IAIA student body. Reporting to the Dean of Students, the Director collaborates with department directors in Student Services and the Academic Division, academic chairs, faculty, and stakeholders seeking consultation on students' behaviors, mental health needs, and psychosocial functioning. Provides strategic direction, supervision, and clinical oversight to ensure the delivery of high-quality mental health services to students while maintaining a consistent client load.
Engages with campus community members to implement clinical services, outreach, community-level interventions, consultations, and crisis intervention. Additionally, serves as IAIA's representative on university issues concerning mental health policies, strategies, and legal matters.
Key Responsibilities:Strategic Leadership and Administration:Provides leadership in the strategic visioning and implementation of campus-wide mental wellbeing initiatives, contributing to the strategic planning of the University.Analyzes data on student mental health trends, utilization rates, and outcomes to allocate resources effectively and tailor services to student needs.Directs and administers programs and services of the counseling department.Maintains current knowledge and application of ethics, laws, and regulations governing mental health practices to include upholding professional standards in all aspects of counseling practice, including confidentiality, informed consent, and boundaries.Develops an annual departmental budget and monitors expenditures.Provides administrative oversight and supervision to the counselor team.Develops, revises, and implements clinical service delivery and emergency protocols.Campus Engagement and Collaboration:Maintains involvement and engagement of the counseling department with campus partners to ensure a community-level approach to campus mental wellbeing.Consults with parents, medical and mental health professionals, Student Services staff, faculty, and other staff about student mental health and psychological functioning.Partners with Student Services staff to advise and structure withdrawals and academic adjustments for students impacted by mental health issues.Participates as a consultant on committees reviewing students of concern or students returning from medical leaves of absence.Serves on the campus life leadership team, collaborating with colleagues.Provides training and programming to student leaders, campus partners, faculty, and other constituents to promote student safety, wellbeing, and personal and professional development.Guides overall programming and outreach efforts of the counseling department.Provides advising/consultation to student organizations aligned with the mission of the counseling department, supporting student leadership development while promoting mental health across campus.Clinical Counseling and Crisis Response:Provides psychological counseling, adhering to appropriate clinical documentation practices, and maintaining a consistent client load.Serves as the mental health contact person for the Housing Director, on-call for consultation during mental health crises beyond their scope of response.Culturally competent, sensitive to issues related to race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, and other identities.Leads initiatives that promote mental well-being, reduce stigma, and create a supportive campus environment.Remains familiar with technology for counseling and outreach.Adheres to appropriate professional standards of conduct and ethics, including integrity, honesty, compliance with directives, and cooperation with others.Performs other related duties and functions as required.Requirements:Preferred Education:A doctoral degree in counseling psychology or clinical psychology.Minimum Qualifications:5 years experience as an independently licensed therapist within a clinical setting (or at least 3 years as an independently licensed therapist).Comprehensive training in historical and intergenerational trauma, as well as trauma-informed and culturally responsive care, especially working with Indigenous and BIPOC communities.Comprehensive training working with LGBTQ2S+ clients and communities.Operates from a holistic framework, honoring mental, physical, emotional and spiritual aspects of health and wellbeing.Five years of counseling experience within a counseling agency setting, with a strong preference for candidates who have held positions within a college counseling center, demonstrating increasing administrative responsibilities.License to practice independently as a psychologist, counselor, or clinical social worker.Knowledge of ethics, laws, and regulations governing mental health practices.Ability to provide clinical supervision and oversight.Commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion in mental health practice.Capacity to work effectively within a multidisciplinary team and engage with diverse campus stakeholders.Working Conditions:Duties are performed on campus.Duties require extended periods of standing, walking, sitting, and talking.Occasional travel for meetings, conferences, and other events using personal or company vehicle.Ability and flexibility to work some evening and weekend hours, in order to meet departmental and institutional support needs and deadlines.May be instructed to perform additional duties as needed.Performance evaluation will include assessment of work results as described herein.This job description does not list all the duties of the job.IAIA administration reserves the right to revise this job description at any time.The job description is not a contract for employment.
