The Legal Department of JPMorgan Chase & Co. provides legal advice to the Firm globally, across all lines of business, corporate functions, and regions. The Global Technology Legal Practice Group, which is a part of the Corporate Legal Department, provides legal support to the firm's technology organization, and to all business units on data and technology matters. This Practice Group provides primary legal coverage in the areas of Privacy, Data Management, Intellectual Property, Cybersecurity, Cloud, Real Estate, Technology Transactions, Outsourcing, SaaS and Licensing Agreements, Blockchain and Cryptocurrencies, and other emerging technologies including quantum computing and artificial intelligence/machine learning. We are currently seeking a VP/Assistant General Counsel to join the Privacy Legal team, with a primary focus on advising the Firm's Global Centralized Records Management Program (CRMP) and a secondary focus on matters that implicate national and sub-national data protection, privacy, and other data-related laws in the Latin America Region. The Privacy Legal team provides legal support across the Firm to all lines of business and corporate functions. This is an excellent opportunity for a seasoned attorney with experience in data management, records retention and disposition, and privacy to work at the intersection of data, tech, and finance. This role offers the opportunity to collaborate, innovate, and provide strategic advice.
Privacy Legal's responsibilities include: Providing day-to-day legal advice and counsel to internal clients and partners on data-related risks at every stage of the information life cycle;Managing the legal aspects of the Firm's global record retention schedule and the laws that underpin it;Resolving conflicts between privacy laws and the multiple, overlapping regulatory regimes that impose other obligations on the Firm when processing data;Facilitating the development, transformation and evolution of the Firm's operations, products, services, technologies, analytics and other data capabilities through cost effective, efficient, business-driven, and legally-compliant business solutions;Assisting in the development and implementation of internal and external privacy policies, procedures, guidance, and best practices;Participating and advising on data incident response, incident response playbooks, and education and training in line with changing regulatory guidance and best practices;Drafting and negotiating client-facing and vendor agreements related to privacy and data protection;Analyzing privacy and related regulations and advising on implementation of those regulations;Responding to regulatory inquiries on privacy compliance, advising on regulatory engagement strategy, and providing legal coverage for privacy-related regulatory exams;Identifying, synthesizing, and socializing trends in privacy legislation and enforcement, including through the development and delivery of training and education;Contributing to advocacy and policy efforts with internal teams, including Government Relations and Regulatory Affairs, to foster awareness of evolving privacy legislative landscape in the U.S. at both the federal and state levels.Qualifications: Must possess 6+ years of experience as a practicing attorney, preferably with experience in both private practice and in an in-house environment.Experience and strong interest in data protection, data management, records retention, privacy, and technology.Experience navigating the current legal and regulatory requirements relating to data management and privacy, ideally for financial institutions; firm grasp of developing legislation at both the national and sub-national levels.Experience drafting and negotiating privacy aspects of technology and other privacy-related contract provisions.Strong analytical, problem-solving, and legal research skills.Strong business judgment and strategic thinking.Proven ability to independently and proactively identify issues, analyze problems and provide viable solutions.Excellent verbal and written English skills, and strong interpersonal, organizational, and negotiation skills.Ability to communicate and interact effectively with all levels of personnel and management, including senior executives.Ability to work under pressure, handle deadlines, and manage multiple tasks in a high-performance environment.
