Job Summary: Providing consistent reading support and engaging mentorship can have an immense impact on the life of a young person who is struggling with reading.
You can become a part of their literacy journey and earn your federal work study award through the America Reads program through the Thayne Center.

America Reads Tutors work with elementary-aged children on a one-on-one or small group basis to build their literacy skills at one of our partner sites.
Partner site will be Esperanza Elementary, and the role will be in both English and Spanish.

The Thayne Center for Student Life, Leadership, and Community Engagement provides a supportive and inclusive office for students to explore community involvement, leadership, and volunteerism.
By providing opportunities in conjunction with local nonprofits, we cultivate an environment to test our students' interests and area of study while assisting them to realize they have the knowledge and skills to affect positive change in our community.

Tutors work at the partner site for 8-20 hours per week, receiving a schedule from the partner about which students will benefit most from consistent motivation and support.
During their time at the partner site, tutors will build a mentoring relationship with the students and share their passion for reading and education.
In this program, the tutor will get direct experience working with students, learning about the education system, and working in a fast-paced environment.
This is a community work-study position.
Community work-study should not be your primary source of income, but to help with supplemental expenses only.
Essential Responsibilities and Duties: Must work at least 8 hours and no more than 20 a week during the semester.Must be comfortable talking with students, staff, and faculty.Must have basic computer skills.Tutors may create their own work schedules within available tutoring hours at their school sites.Participate in any onboarding or orientation required by Salt Lake Community College (SLCC), Thayne Center, Esperanza Elementary, and America Reads.Carry out short lesson plans for children at the partner site directed by the teacher.Read with students and be read to by students.Serve as a mentor and positive role model to younger students.Engage students in learning and literacy enrichment activities.Meet with the site supervisor.Minimum Qualifications: Must have an SLCC Federal work-study award through SLCC's Financial Aid office.Must be able to earn a Work Study award.Must be enrolled in 6 credit hours per semester.Must be able to leave campus and access the partner site using their preferred transportation method.Preferred Qualifications: Experience teaching others or tutoring.Experience working with elementary-aged students.Bilingual in English and Spanish.Knowledge, Skills & Abilities: Ability to read, write and speak well in English; bilingual skills are a plus!Ability to communicate effectively with a broad range of populations.Desire to work with elementary age students from a broad range of backgrounds and experiences.Serve as a positive role model and mentor.Special Instructions: This posting may hire for multiple positions at multiple locations.
