With our wide variety of career opportunities and professional development pathways, we're sure that you'll enjoy the experience as much as our students do.Position Purpose Under the direction of the Psychotherapy and Mental Health team managers, and in collaboration with the Student Community Support team, conduct the initial triage process to assess students' summary mental health and wellness needs, with the goal of referring them to the appropriate professionals and resources, thus fostering a culture of wellness, perseverance and academic success.
In this role, your responsibilities will include Lead the complex process of assessing (administering questionnaires, assessing needs, providing support) students' needs by asking personal and relevant questions in order to target, in collaboration with the student, their wellness and mental health needs.Meet with students on an ad hoc basis, to support them in times of emotional distress. Intervene in suicide prevention and establish safety plans with students in crisis and at risk. Work with all components of the Student Health, Wellness and Support sector to keep abreast of each other's service offering, to be able to refer students to the most appropriate service. Participate in interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary meetings to monitor the evolution of programs and services, and to present student needs by inviting colleagues to present how their service can meet them. Consult regularly with colleagues in health promotion, student community support, academic accommodations, psychology, psychotherapy, psychiatry, etc., to observe and identify trends in student needs.Refer students to professionals in the field to follow up on the primary assessment process, while continually communicating with the team to maintain equitable distribution among professionals. This responsibility takes into account their expertise, experience and availability. Communicate regularly with colleagues on the effectiveness of this referral process and any issues encountered (e.g. waiting times), with a view to making effective adjustments.Ensure ongoing development of skills in active listening, empathy and clinical judgment in order to demonstrate knowledge, know-how and interpersonal skills in the assessment encounter. Participate in clinical consultation sessions to enrich your skills and contribute by sharing student needs and trends with the team, with a view to adapting our service offering.Referral to internal and external resources. In keeping with our tiered care model, refer students with specialized needs to external resources to meet their needs. In cases of crisis, connect the student with the appropriate resources, according to established crisis management processes. Maintain relationships with organizations in the community to keep abreast of their services and availability. Communicate referral needs according to established processes in order to create and maintain other partnerships.What you will bring Undergraduate degree in social sciences (psychology, social work) or other related discipline or equivalent combination of education and work experience.2 years' experience in health services in a multidisciplinary team.Knowledge of mental health issues (for a university clientele).Knowledge of internal and external resources, or training to be provided by the University on internal (and possibly external) resources.Strong reception, active listening, empathy, emotional restraint, communication and interpersonal skills.Ability to collaborate in interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary environments, both within and outside the University.Sensitivity to issues of confidentiality, informed consent, accessibility and diversity. Clean criminal record.Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training (ASIST) or equivalent training. (May be provided by the University).Knowledge and experience of computer systems and software such as Windows, word processing, spreadsheets, databases, Internet and e-mail.Ability to occasionally work evenings and weekends as required.Bilingualism - French and English (oral and written).Key Competencies at uOttawa:

The rating is determined by a proficiency test designed by the Official Languages and Bilingualism Institute.
