A law firm seeks an experienced ERISA/Taft-Hartley Attorney to join their team in Cerritos, CA. This position offers the opportunity to work on complex employee welfare benefit plans, focusing on Taft-Hartley Trusts and Voluntary Employees' Beneficiary Associations (VEBAs). The ideal candidate will have a strong foundation in ERISA law, particularly as it applies to public and private sector benefit plans, and will be involved in drafting plan documents, attending trust meetings, and handling ERISA litigation matters.
Duties Represent clients in the preparation and review of plan documents for Taft-Hartley Trusts and VEBAsAttend trust meetings and provide legal counsel during discussionsDraft various legal documents related to employee welfare benefit plansOffer advice on compliance with DOL and IRS regulations regarding benefit plansAssist with ERISA litigation, including supporting case preparation and representing clients in legal proceedingsCollaborate with public and private sector trust fund clients to ensure the proper administration of employee benefitsTravel regionally to attend trust meetings as requiredMaintain up-to-date knowledge of changes in ERISA laws, regulations, and industry standardsRequirements Minimum of 3 years of experience working with Taft-Hartley Trusts or VEBAsStrong working knowledge of DOL and IRS rules related to employee welfare benefit plansExperience drafting plan documents and advising on benefit plan complianceERISA litigation experience is preferredFamiliarity with public sector benefit plans is a plusAbility to travel regionally for client meetings and trust fund activitiesEducation Juris Doctor (JD) from an accredited law schoolCertifications Active state law licenseSkills Extensive knowledge of ERISA law and its application to Taft-Hartley Trusts and VEBAsStrong legal writing, drafting, and research skillsExcellent communication and interpersonal skillsAbility to work independently and handle multiple responsibilitiesDetail-oriented with a focus on compliance and accuracyCapacity to manage client relationships and contribute to trust fund management
